This puzzle was inspired by one that Vadim made in February 2013. He used a different puzzle as the core though the result is quite similar.
I wanted to call this the X Skewb but that name has already been used. So instead I decided on The X Factor Puzzle. My X Factor puzzle has nothing to do with the popular TV show so there's nothing on this page about Simon Cowell, Britney Spears, Gary Barlow, Cheryl Cole, Nicole Scherzinger, Paula Abdul etc etc. There is no copyright issue because the term X Factor is obviously not owned by anyone. I would only run into trouble if I made a new TV show and called it The X Factor, claimed that this was official X Factor merchandise or made the colouring on my puzzle exactly the same as their logo.
I did actually contact the shows producers in the hope perhaps that they could make it official merchandise but without even looking at it they said they don't accept offers like this from 3rd parties.Your loss Simon! If the UK pop group Muse can do it I don't see why X Factor can't!
Enough about the show and more about the puzzle. It rotates reasonably well and each move ends with a click like the original Skewb it was made from. I constructed it using silicone rubber moulds and polyurethane resin.
Later in 2013 I decided it wouldn't be economical for me to make more to sell. So I contacted Uwe Meffert and he agreed to mass produce it. Uwe always has his own ideas when it comes to names and he quickly decided on "Skewb Xtreme". He released 3 versions which can be purcahsed by clicking the first photo below.
