I very rarely copy other people's work but I made an exception for this puzzle. Erno Rubik made his wooden prototype in 1974. The full story is not clear but I believe it was the first fully functional one after at least one other attempt at a 3x3x3. He had previously tried to made a wooden 2x2x2 with limited success.
A friend of mine tells me the wood he used was most likely teak. My replica however was made from oak and dyed to a dark mahogany colour. Teak wasn't available to me so I had to make do. On hindsite the finish is not perfect and looks a bit too shiny.
My version was made using a good quality modern genuine Rubik' Cube as a core. The original of course had a custom made core and I suspect movement would have been quite poor.
Please watch the video for a further explanation of Erno's puzzle and my replica.
