I constructed this 5x5x5 egg from a genuine V-Cube 5. It was made through a combination of hand shaping using a Dremel plus polyurethane resin cast from silicone rubber moulds. To avoid sticker bubbling from resin out-gassing I used a new technique I am calling "finger nailing". This involves making resin parts with recesses that are later filled with milliput. This avoids stickers going directly onto cast resin and is shown in my last photo. No 3D printing or CAD was used in the construction of this puzzle. An egg is a far harder shape to make than a ball and this is the first one I have made by hand.
In recent years there has been several mass produced Eggs made. The Morph Egg, Mefferts and my Golden Eggs, Metalised 2x2 Eggs and the newer Metalised Morph Eggs. All of these have similar cutting planes which are at an angle (in the region of 45 - 60 deg) to the 'length ways' of the Eggs. I wanted to create something slightly different and have the cutting planes parallel or at 90 deg to the length ways direction. This makes the puzzle easier but I was getting bored of the others being so similar.
The first 5x5x5 Egg puzzle I made was actually white and I cut coloured stickers by hand. However I discovered that these types of stickers are too thick to fit the tightly curved surface. For this reason for the small batch of black Eggs I made I asked Olivér's Stickers to make them for me in a metallic material which is thinner than his regular stickers. Using just one colour would not work because it would have resulted in an extremely easy puzzle. So for this reason I have used a combination of two colours in a stripy fashion to make it a little harder.
